Bioponica is devoted to research and development of sustainable farming systems for education, jobs and food security. More from the Bioponica web site,

By convention it is necessary to use store bought fertilizers or else rely on fish to provide them from their waste. The problem is that these approaches are either unsustainable, hydroponics or else require a close management of fish to maintain sufficient ammonia excretion, aquaponics.
With bioponics, it is possible to grow edible plants and fish without purchasing  anything more than seeds and fish fry, simply by recycling nutrients from grass clippings, leaves and worm teas, giving us an opportunity to create abundant fish food and water fertility for growing even heavy feeding plants like tomatoes and melons.
Hydroponics uses chemicals or else requires the purchase of “organic” fertilizers from far away places and to be shipped to the site. This

Mattress Pads & Pillows Can Grow Microbes In Dorms, Study Says

A study conducted in Florida has discovered that thousands of microbes, fungi, molds and other bacteria can grow in pillows and mattress pads in college dormitories.

The study has also revealed that college mens bedding are twice as likely to be more infested, with yeast and mold ever present in more than half the subjects tested. Mattress pads, on the other hand, have four times more infestation than pillows.

And its something that students at university dont really think about.

With so many activities and school work to do, bedding cleanliness is less of a priority. And dormitories are filled with people coming in and out of each others bedroom, as well as doing stuff that has less to do with actual sleeping (like eating or drinking booze and chips on the bed).

There is a risk here because students are sleeping with bacteria that may likely cause or trigger health problems at a later age.

I’m in Toronto visiting my mother and getting ready for a major gathering at the University of Toronto to honor my father, so I won’t be posting much this week. Still, I couldn’t resist trying to describe yesterday’s weather.

The day was so cold and blustery day that Con said she’d feared my plane wouldn’t be able to land. We were eating dinner, and the winds and snow she described were hard to imagine, or believe in. From her eighth-floor apartment, we looked south over a sunny citiscape towards Lake Ontario, blue in the distance. Above it all, occasional clouds swept across a blue sky. But as I’d left my plane several hours earlier, I’d been buffeted by a crosswind between plane and jetway that had startled me.

Then I got to see one of the sudden storms she said had swept across the city all day.

We were trading news and plans for the week when I interrupted her to say that it looked as if it was raining off to the west. A moment lat
