We have all dreamed of owning a farm and living off the land and our own toil. Sadly, most of us will never achieve that goal. The next best thing is to start a garden. Here are a few tips to help you make the best of your space.
If you have a good amount of land you should construct some large raised beds. They are the best option for growing the most varieties of plants but they take the most effort to construct. They also take up the most room.
I suggest getting a couple storage sheds. They help keep your tools organized and protected from the elements and jealous neighbors. There are a lot of different kinds of metal storage sheds but the more land you have the bigger you are going to want your shed. That way you can keep your mower at ground level and you won’t have to deal with lugging it out of the basement. This is even truer if you have a riding mower. You will need someplace to store it and a storage shed is the ideal option.
If you live in a city you need to look into planter gardening. There are a lot of urban gardening options available to us today that we did not have in the past. Planters are a great option but larger plants are going to need more space than a planter can provide. If you don’t plan on moving your plants too often then you can construct framed garden beds. They are similar to the raised bed I suggested earlier but they are much deeper since the plants will need you to provide all of their soil. Not just the top soil.
These are just some considerations that you should keep in mind when starting a new garden. Whether it’s in the country or in the city, much of the requirements are the same. You might not think that you have a lot of space but check if you can do rooftop gardening. Some people have built some very impressive gardens and even lawns on top of old warehouses. Ever seen a garden storage shed on top of a warehouse and a man riding a mower around the perimeter? It’s an odd sight.
