About 20Million old mattresses are being disposed at landfills every year. This number is just for the United States alone and the volume is enough to fill out a landfill. The landfill problem is really a major problem with environmentalists. With this in mind, it seems like a great idea to help out the earth and consider buying a used mattress, instead. Used mattresses are sold a lot cheaper as well, so it would also seem like youre saving money when you buy this.
But as much as it does prevent this mattress from ever ending up on another landfill and filling up the earth, consider what youre in for when you buy a used mattress: bed bugs.
Bed bugs is a growing epidemic. And just like the landfill problem, this may look like theres also no concrete solution for it. Bed bugs are irritating to the skin and can cause nasty bites. While they dont spread disease like other insects, the though of being bitten, leaving you scratchy in all places, is unhygienic and uncomfortable.
So whats the solution? How can you save the earth and keep yourself safe from bed bugs as well?
1. If youre really considering buying a used mattress, be sure to thoroughly examine it for bed bugs and other infestation. Also examine the quality, inside out, for you may save money on this, but end up getting one thats good for a years use only.
2. Buy a mattress encasement if youre ending up with a used mattress. This is a MUST.
3. Consider getting an eco-mattress instead, such as the ones sold at Keetsa. And then donate your used mattress to a recycling facility, like Earth911, so that it doesnt end up in a landfill.
