With the holidays coming up, it’s always interesting to see how many different celebrations are recognized at this time of year. In November, there’s Dia de los Muertos (the Latin American Day of the Dead), All Saints Day, Al Hijra (the Muslim new year), and Diwali (the Festival of Lights). Then, December holds Bodhi day (celebrating the enlightenment of the Buddha), Hanukkah, Kwanza, Christmas, and Boxing Day. Self-described “regular guy,” Gideon Mendelson seemed destined to become an interior designer. His grandfather was an architect, his grandmother an artist, and his mother had her own interior design firm. He grew up surrounded by blueprints and fabric samples and remembers doodling on paper-covered tables when sitting in restaurants with his family. But, even though he enjoyed a natural artistic talent and graduated with a degree in architecture from Columbia, his career took a detour. Mendelson also enjoyed a talent and passion for tennis. He was a nationally ranked junior and captained the Columbia team. He credits tennis for the independence, entrepreneurial and relationship skills that are the hallmarks of his success today. Assuming that he would make a career as a talent agent, he went to work for the William Morris Agency. Read more…

No matter where you live, one of the best ways to improve energy efficiency in your home is to secure or re-enforce your Thermal Envelope.  The Thermal Envelope is the combined effect of your existing windows and doors, wall and roof assembly, weather-stripping, insulation and air retarders.

The Federal Citizen Information Center (FCIC) contends that insulation is a critical factor in securing the thermal envelope. You should strive, where possible, to install products with higher insulation R-values than those required to suit local building codes.

Consider that the insulation of foundations and slabs is also critical in putting a seal at the bottom of the residential envelope. In
