No matter how large or small your home or patch of garden is, you can give it an identity all of its own. I remember once moving house, and when the removal guys off loaded all the furniture into one room, I was completely aghast, wondering where on earth I was going to fit everything. But it’s amazing that with a little juggling you can tweak and alter the layout so that your possessions will fit, and hopefully complement your space.

There are situations however when no amount of shoving and re-jigging will accommodate absolutely every single item you have. I once owned a lovely old pine dresser that I was determined to get into my living room. For days, I dragged it up and down the room determined to find a home for it. The fact that two of the walls were windows or doors, and the third a row of cupboards, meant that the remaining wall, the only place to put the couch, was my only option. It was never going to work.
